Cruise Ships Can Run Casinos While in Bermuda Ports
7/26/20086:57:09 PM Link 0 comments | Add comment
July 26, 2008... Cruise ships will be allowed to open late-night casinos in port after Cabinet approved a plan aimed at fighting off increasing competition from rival cruise destinations.
The Opposition United Bermuda Party has attacked the move, which it said had been made without any public consultation and would open the door to gambling on the Island.
Premier and Tourism Minister Ewart Brown announced the decision as one of a number of alterations to cruise ship legislations. The Premier said ships would now be allowed to open bars and signature shops and “provide full entertainment inclusive of the opening of casinos after 10 p.m. while in port”. He said cruise lines would in return be required to contribute hundreds of thousands of dollars to on-Island activities such as the Bermuda Music Festival and Harbor Nights.
Opinion over gambling has long divided the Island, with the AME Church recently condemning the controversial casino ship Niobe Corinthian which came to Bermuda and the Seventh-day Adventist Church hitting out against poker games which were being played in bars.
As well as allowing casinos on cruise ships, Cabinet has also approved a proposal to waive the $14 cabin tax for Hamilton and St. George’s for three years from 2009.
Azamara Modifies 2008-09 Itineraries To Take Guests Closer To Thai, Vietnamese Cities

July 24, 2008... Taking advantage of its ships' smaller size, Azamara Cruises has modified its 2008-09 itineraries to take guests closer to several cities in Thailand and Vietnam. The smaller size of the deluxe, 694-guest Azamara Quest, which will begin sailing in the region in December of this year, allows the vessel to access ports inaccessible to larger cruise ships. Azamara recently announced these changes would begin with its 2009-10 Asia season, but has worked hard to implement them sooner in order to create the ideal guest experience. Azamara Quest will sail to new dock locations in Bangkok (Klong Toey), Thailand, and Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi (Ha Long Bay), Vietnam.
Bangkok (Klong Toey), Thailand
- Azamara Quest will dock at the Klong Toey Port, located on the Chao Phraya River, typically less than 30 minutes from the city center. (This will occur on all pertinent sailings except the January 17, 2009 sailing, which will still call at the Laem Chabang port for scheduling reasons.)
- Azamara Quest will be one of the largest ships to dock at Klong Toey, as other larger ships dock two-and-a-half to three hours away at the Laem Chabang Port. Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
- Azamara Quest will dock at the Saigon Port, approximately five kilometers from the city center.
- Azamara Quest will transit up the Song River, offering scenic views along the way.
- To ensure daylight passage along the river, Azamara Quest will arrive at the Saigon Port at 9 a.m. and will depart at 4 p.m.
- Other larger ships must dock or tender two-and-a-half hours away at the Vung Tau anchorage, or dock at the Phu My Port.
Hanoi (Ha Long Bay), Vietnam
- Due to depth issues in the channel, Azamara Quest no longer will dock in Haiphong, Vietnam, but instead dock at the Cai Lan Port in Ha Long Bay.
- Hanoi is approximately three hours from the port at Ha Long Bay, the same distance as it was from the previously scheduled port of Haiphong.
- While arriving at its dockside berth, Azamara Quest will sail through Ha Long Bay, well-known for the thousands of limestone islands that dot its landscape.
- For guests not wishing to travel to Hanoi, Ha Long Bay will offer a multitude of activities; the area was designated as a UNESCO Heritage Site in 2000.
Azamara also is adding additional time for guests to explore Hue (Danang) Vietnam, and Sihanoukville, Cambodia. In Cambodia, Azamara will offer an overnight shore excursion to Siem Reap, the location of the famous temples of Angkor Wat. In Northeast Asia, Azamara is replacing its calls to Fukuoka, Japan, with overnight, in-port stays in Shanghai, China.
Azamara's deluxe ships - Azamara Journey and Azamara Quest - offer an intimate experience, while allowing access to exotic destinations experienced travelers long to reach.
Important Changes to Downtown Disney Area at Walt Disney World Resort®

July 2, 2008...
Walt Disney World® Resort has announced that all the nightclubs on Pleasure Island will close after Sept. 27, 2008. So beginning Sept. 28, 2008, the Water Park Fun & More Option will no longer include admission to the Pleasure Island nightclubs.
A new choice is available - you can choose to use a visit to play a round of golf at Disney's Oak Trail Golf Course, a relaxed, nine-hole walking course. Of course, you can still choose to use a visit for admission to Disney Water Parks, DisneyQuest® Indoor Interactive Theme Park or Disney's Wide World of Sports® Complex.
This news is part of a bold new vision for the Downtown Disney area, including extraordinary new shopping, dining, numerous enhancements and a completely re-imagined Pleasure Island.
Over the next year, the 120-acre entertainment-shopping-dining complex will add a number of one-of-a-kind, immersive experiences for you to enjoy. The Downtown Disney area will even get its own iconic attraction — a giant, tethered balloon that will take you 300 feet into the air to view the amazing vistas of Walt Disney World Resort.
Other new experiences include:
- In fall 2008, you will enter a world of prehistoric creatures at T-Rex: A Prehistoric Family Adventure. The dinosaur-themed eatery will serve up pizzas, pastas, seafood and more amid life-size dinosaurs, geysers, waterfalls and a fossil dig site.
- Also this fall, a design-your-own t-shirt store from Hanes will add to the growing collection of merchandise you can personalize.
- E-brands Restaurants will premier its newest concept in spring 2009. The casual eatery will feature authentic Central and South American cuisine and live music along the waterfront.
